Young Roar downed by Jets in thriller

The Young Roar has gone down 4-3 in an end-to-end Foxtel National Youth League encounter with Newcastle Jets at Dunmore Park on Sunday.

After conceding an early penalty, the Roar took the lead for the first time through two quick goals before the half hour mark before Newcastle Jets scored twice to regain the lead before the break.

The away side extended their lead ten minutes into the second stanza through Braedyn Crowley before Brisbane’s Patrick Theodore set up a frantic finish with a goal in the 62nd minute.

The first real action of the match came in the 16th minute when Roar goalkeeper Fraser Chalmers conceded a penalty with a rash challenge on Crowley, Brandon Lundy scoring his first goal of the morning from the spot.

The home side reacted well, first Mitch Hore equalising after he was set up by mazing run from Shannon Brady before Devante Clut dinked a clever ball over for Abrahim Yango to calmly round the ‘keeper and take the lead.

In the five minutes before half time, Lundy scored his second from inside the area before Jets captain Allan Welsh headed home from a set piece to make it 3-2 to the visitors as the lead in the match swung for the third time.

Unmarked Crowley made it 4-2 after the break then Theodore’s classy finish made for an entertaining final half hour.

Chalmers provided plenty of highlights between the sticks, notably denying overage James Virgili on numerous occasions, while Clut went closest to a deserved equaliser for the Young Roar as he was denied from close range by Jets custodian John Solari.

The away side held on to claim the three points in the Round 9 match with John Sime’s troops now preparing for Melbourne Victory Youth this Saturday, 20 December at Dunmore Park. Kick off at 2.30pm.
