Wanderers too strong for AIS

Western Sydney Wanderers moved to fifth place on the National Youth League ladder after a dominant 3-0 win over the Australian Institute of Sport at Cook Park on Saturday.

In stifling conditions, exciting teenager Alusine Fofanah and Mark Cindric scored in the first half before Yianni Perkatis made sure of the points with a great freekick in the second half.

After both sides hit the woodwork in a frantic opening, Fofanah gave the hosts the lead with a well taken goal after good work from Tahj Minniecon in the build-up.

It continued a rich vein of form from the 16-year-old after he also scored in last week’s defeat against Newcastle Jets.

Cindric doubled the Wanderers’ lead shortly before half-time with a nice strike that left AIS goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell with no chance.

The onslaught continued after the break with Thurtell producing a stunning save to keep out substitute Lawrence Hanna’s point-blank strike.

Hanna had another goal-bound effort saved before Perkatis added a third with a stunning freekick.

Kwabena Appiah had a chance to add a fourth late on but his shot was well saved by Thurtell.

The victory lifts the Wanderers above Brisbane into fifth place, just one point behind Melbourne Victory.
