Rooney sinks Perth Youth

Sydney FC youth has extended its unbeaten run to six games with striker Sean Rooney bagging a double in the sky blues’ 3-0 home win over Perth Glory at Seymour Shaw Park in Sydney on Saturday.

The ladder-leading Sydney stormed out of the blocks to take a four minute lead from Rooney and he made it two on 72 minutes.

Right on full-time, defender Anthony Golec popped up to smash home a low shot home to make it three for Sydney.

The home side deserved the win with a glut of possession and numerous chances to increase its lead but poor finishing cost them.

The game began at a lightning pace and the pacy Sydney midfield was immediately on the front foot on the artificial surface. It was no surprise the sky blues opened the scoring.

Attacking midfielder Chris Payne won possession in the Glory front third and took the ball forward before releasing Brendan Gan wide who squared the ball for Rooney. He had way too much space in the box and he easily slotted home.

Rooney with Payne, Kofi Danning and Gan contined to torment the Glory back four as the home side racked up the corners in the opening stanza.

And Sydney could have extended its lead shortly after following a bursting run from midfielder Danning down the right but his ball into Sam Munro’s feet wasn-t controlled and the danger was cleared.

Glory was struggling to cope with Sydney’s speed from deep in defence but the visitor weathered the early storm and worked its way back into the game.

Perth’s best chance came after a cut back header found Reece Vittaglia on the edge of the box but he blasted over just on the half hour mark.

But Sydney could’ve easily been two up right on the half-time mark with two excellent chances. Gan chased a weak back pass to Glory keeper Dejan Aleksic who almost made a mess of the contest before desperately clearing his line.

And seconds later good interplay from Rooney and Danning on the edge of the box saw Danning’s low shot saved by the legs of Aleksic.

Sydney went in to the sheds 1-0 up it could’ve easily been two or three.

The second half started the way the first began with the sky blues putting Glory under pressure immediately. Payne’s cross found Rooney’s head but as the ball dropped, Danning’s shot whizzed just pars the Glory post in the opening five minutes.
Danning again found himself in space in the box minutes later but the Ghana-born star hesitated just a fraction too long and his shot was cleared by a desperate Glory defence.

Sydney piled on the pressure and after a powerful Rooney shot was palmed away by Aleksic, Gan pounced on the loose ball and hit the post on 53 minutes.

Hayden Doyle got onto the end of a set piece for Glory but headed wide as the visitor looked to hit back.

Again a weak back pass to the Glory keeper almost resulted in a second goal to Sydney moments later.

It was end to end stuff with Glory striker Anthony Skoric getting on the end of two good chances the best a low shot that was well saved by Vedran Janjetovic in the sky blue goal.

And on 67 minutes, Glory opened up Sydney with some neat interpassing only for Lee’s cross to fly over the bar.

But it was Rooney who made them pay on 72 minutes with an excellent turn and low strike in the box that went in on off the post.

Sydney continued to press for a third with Rooney and substitute Nik Tsattalios going close before Golec finished off a flowing move by smashing a low shot home from just inside the box.
