Newcastle thump NYL champions Sydney

Newcastle have embarrassed Sydney 7-1 in their Round 17 Foxtel National Youth League clash at WIN Stadium on Sunday.

For Sydney, who had captain Jacob Tratt sent off in the first half, the loss is the second straight since claiming the National Youth League title a fortnight ago.

Newcastle were fluid throughout, had most of the possession in the early stages and opened the scoring in just the sixth minute.

Joey Gibbs lifted a well-weighted ball over the Sydney back four for Radovan Pavicevic to run on to. Tristan Prendergast in the Sydney goal was caught in no-man’s land deciding to come late, and Pavicevic slotted the ball under him to open the scoring.

With six minutes remaining in the half, another Newcastle through ball was latched on to by Kale Bradbery who went nimbly around the advancing Prendergast only to be brought down in the area by Tratt, who was given his marching orders.

Gibbs stepped up to take the shot for the visitors, but while Prendergast was able to deny him with a fine save down to his left, the Jets would not need much longer to make the numerical advantage count.

Moments later a Sydney turnover set the Jets on the attack and a beautiful through ball from Michael Kantarovski found James Brown in stride and he pulled away from the defenders before dispatching the ball in the bottom left hand corner.

Right on half time, Newcastle had a third with an exquisite piece of skill from Gibbs.

A Nicholas Cowburn cross was received in the area by Gibbs who despite being in traffic was able to trap, flick-up and volley crisply on the turn to give the Jets a three goal-lead.

The demolition continued in the second half and Pavicevic had his second six minutes in with a quality finish from a narrow angle.

Gibbs had his second and the Jets’ fifth midway through the second half with Bradbery’s pinpoint cross leaving him with the simplest of tap-ins.

Sydney did manage a consolation goal eight minutes from time with a well-taken goal from Alec Urosevski.

But any joy was short lived as Brown bagged his second before completing his hat-trick in injury time with a wonderful curling free kick.
